​As part of the State of California’s initiative to strengthen community-wide resilience against wildfires, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has partnered with CAL FIRE to develop a community home hardening program. In addition, there has been a huge joint effort between the Lassen & Shasta County Fire Safe Councils and the Western Shasta R.C.D. to develop and implement this program for the Whitmore community, with plans to eventually expand the program to the entire state.

 

The intent of this program will be to provide funding to retrofit, harden, and create defensible space for homes at high risk to wildfires, with a focus on highly vulnerable communities and providing financial assistance for low to moderate income households. The community home hardening concept comes from the latest fire science: the more homes hardened in a community, the lower the risk of wildfire impacts.
